You\u2019ve probably noticed now that the olympics have ended, that the big olympic news wasn\u2019t about the events, it was about some US swimmers and a late night incident at a gas station. So guess what we\u2019re going to be talking about today \u2014 honesty. Honesty is more than just accurately reporting facts \u2014 it includes what you say and also what you don\u2019t<\/em> say. And it includes your actions. Honesty is saying and doing what is true<\/em> \u2014 not false<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t get into the specifics of the gas station incident \u2014 you can read the papers and watch TV just like me. If you\u2019ve noticed what\u2019s been going on in the world lately, you\u2019ve heard about auto companies cheating on auto emissions results and banks that have admitted to massive fraud, governors (and other public officials) charged, or convicted, of corruption.<\/p>\n

And of course, in this election year, let\u2019s not forget politics\u2026 Mark Twain said that politicians would never lie \u201cunless it was absolutely convenient.\u201d
\nThere are currently two candidates running for president (not counting any minority party \u201ccandidates.\u201d) Since this blog is about honesty \u2014 be honest. Dose either candidate exude honesty as an attribute? They both say, \u201ctrust me\u201d but neither provides much, or any, basis for doing so. Just because someone is a \u201cpolitician\u201d doesn\u2019t give him or her a license to practice situational honesty. Honesty isn\u2019t something that can be turned on or off in different situations. You\u2019re either honest and trustworthy or not.<\/p>\n

We have the presidential debates to look forward to \u2014 I\u2019ll make a bold prediction right now. Both candidates will lie \u2014 a harsh term, maybe, but both will<\/em> lie. So here\u2019s where we stand: Both candidates are lying. Our job is to decide which one is lying less. Sad state of affairs isn\u2019t it? We\u2019re reduced to weighing the lies and probably wind up voting for, in our opinion, the least deceitful.<\/p>\n

So have we reached the point, that honesty is just for suckers? Hope not \u2014 we should all remember a Thomas Jefferson quote, \u201cHonesty is the first chapter the the book of wisdom.\u201d
