{"id":731,"date":"2016-06-03T18:11:19","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T18:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=731"},"modified":"2016-06-03T18:11:19","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T18:11:19","slug":"happy-donut-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=731","title":{"rendered":"Happy Donut Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of National Donut Day, I thought I\u2019d attempt to answer that age old question, what came first \u2014 the donut or the hole? Now that I think about it, maybe that wasn\u2019t the question\u2026 maybe it was the chicken or the egg \u2014 but never mind. My extensive research didn\u2019t turn up the answer anyway.<br \/>\nMy extensive research did, however, uncover the fact that modern donut machinery dispenses just rings of dough, so the \u201choles\u201d must be made separately.<br \/>\nSince donuts are simply fried dough, why are they called donuts \u2014 the basic donut doesn\u2019t contain nuts. Apparently the original fried dough concoctions were about the size and shape of walnuts, so they were called dough-nuts.<br \/>\nJust about everybody likes donuts \u2014 there\u2019s a place in Hagerstown called Krumpe\u2019s. It\u2019s located in the middle of a small alley \u2014 now named Donut Alley.<\/p>\n<p>Supposedly cops love donuts. The story goes that when police cars became common in the 1940s and \u201850s, one of the few eateries open during grave yard shifts were donut shops that opened early to cater to the breakfast crowd. Policemen got into the habit of going there for a cup of coffee and a donut.<\/p>\n<p>But one of the more famous writings about donuts came from the Optimist\u2019s Creed \u2014 created and published more than 100 years ago in the New York Sun newspaper as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cTwist optimist and pessimist<br \/>\nThe difference is droll;<br \/>\nThe optimist the doughnut sees &#8211;<br \/>\nThe pessimist the hole.<\/p>\n<p>A restaurant in Charleston, West Virginia revitalized the Optimist\u2019s Creed\u2019s wording and message in 1929 to what we\u2019re familiar with today\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As you ramble through life, brother,<br \/>\nWhatever be your goal<br \/>\nKeep your eye upon the doughnut<br \/>\nAnd not upon the hole.<\/p>\n<p>Good advice today \u2014 Happy Doughnut\/Donut Day\u2026.<br \/>\n\u2014 30 \u2014<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of National Donut Day, I thought I\u2019d attempt to answer that age old question, what came first \u2014 the donut or the hole?
