We got to spend the most time with Locke this week since he\u2019s been born. The first time we saw him he was sleeping, at Christmas, he was awake some, but mostly just hungry. This time he had become a little person \u2014 took a few cat-naps, but was mostly awake and just checking things out. You could see amazement and wonder in his eyes sometimes and there was no questioning what he thought was funny \u2014 just amazing to see how much he\u2019s developed and how active he\u2019s become in such a short time.<\/p>\n

I wonder what it is that make grandchildren tug at your heart and makes them so special? Maybe it\u2019s because they\u2019re all play and no work. I really don\u2019t have the responsibility of raising them and because my mind isn\u2019t concerned about mundane things like work, it\u2019s easy to tune in to them, and then of course there\u2019s the old saying, \u201csend em\u2019 home when they get cranky.\u201d But I suspect there\u2019s more to it than that.<\/p>\n

I think because we\u2019re not in contact with our grandkids every day and we\u2019re not totally expected to discipline them, it creates a special kind of relationship. To be honest, my goal, and I work hard at it, is to be the world\u2019s greatest grandkid spoiler and I\u2019ve pretty much already forgotten the meaning of the word \u201cno.\u201d What a great job \u2014 this being a granddad.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m looking forward to more time with Locke \u2014 I\u2019ve already decided grandsons can be just as much fun as granddaughters. Someone said, \u201cnever have children, only grandchildren.\u201d I don\u2019t totally<\/em> disagree\u2026.
