A few days ago President Biden indicated that he was going to have a \u201dcome to Jesus\u201d meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When asked, Biden said that the expression \u201ccome to Jesus\u201d was one that is commonly used in southern Delaware and that it means a \u201cserious meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The phrase isn\u2019t just common to southern Delaware \u2014 I think it\u2019s pretty universal. I\u2019ve heard it as long as I can remember and I grew up in Oklahoma. When I was young and my mother took me to the Baptist Church in Maysville, every church service ended with a \u201ccome to Jesus\u201d moment. They always ended the service singing songs and the minister asking people accept Jesus and be \u201csaved.\u201d I think he was, in fact, asking them to \u201ccome to Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have a suspicion that the phrase originated from those kinds of religious services or activities \u2014 religions pushing for personal conversions to save their souls by turning away from the devil and coming to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But today, the \u201creligious\u201d aspect of the phrase has gotten lost. People that say \u201cwe need to have a \u201ccome to Jesus\u201d meeting are not just serious, but they\u2019re really, really, really, serious. It\u2019s meant to convey the importance of a meeting where some crisis is finally going to be addressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think it\u2019s interesting that this phrase must have originated in the Christian community \u2014 I don\u2019t ever remember hearing of a \u201ccome to Allah\u201d meeting or \u201ccome to Buddha\u201d meeting\u2026..
