Well, here be me most favorite holiday again \u2014 Talk Like a Pirate Day. Today everyone around here will be calling each other \u201cme hearties,\u201d be donning their finest eye patches and pulling the usual shenanigans that they do every year. Needless to say me and me wench Claire will host our usual Hornpipe ceremony and make our rounds for a pint or two of grog.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of our neighbors still don\u2019t get it and keep asking me why do we need a Talk Like a Pirate Day? The best thing about Talk Like a Pirate Day is that it\u2019s fun. If you\u2019re new at it, and would like to give it a try, here are the five basic words to master \u2014 then you can move on to the \u201creal\u201d pirate talk. Well\u2026. because we do \u2014 I can\u2019t exactly say why, but we do need<\/em> Talk Like a Pirate Day. A lot of people think that the day romanticizes pirates, but that\u2019s not the case. I\u2019ve said it before \u2014 pirates were, and are, bad people. I\u2019m not for one minute suggesting that real, honest-to-goodness pirates in any way, shape of form should be \u201cromanticized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ahoy! \u2014 \u201cHello!\u201d
Avast! \u2014 It can be used in a sense of surprise, like \u201cCheck it out,\u201d or \u201cNo way!\u201d
Aye! \u2014 \u201cWhy yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did\u201d
Aye aye! \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ll get right on that sir, as soon as I finish my grog.\u201d
Arr! \u2014 This one is often confused with arrrgh \u2014 the sound you make when your stump your toe. Arr! can mean \u201cyes,\u201d \u201cI agree,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m enjoying my beer,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m happy,\u201d or lots of other things \u2014 lots of possibilities here\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for all you newbies, just start with adding \u201cme hearties\u201d to the end of any sentence, like \u201cdrink up, me hearties,\u201d or \u201cmeet me at the pub, me hearty.\u201d Me hearty just means my friends or mates\u2026.
So give some of these expressions a whirl today and amaze your friends.
