It\u2019s acknowledged that the United States was one of the last nations to abolish slavery \u2014 but \u2014 it wasn\u2019t the last<\/em> \u2014 even in the Americas. That distinction goes to Brazil, in 1888. It\u2019s generally accepted that the last nation to abolish slavery was Mauritania, a country in west Africa, in 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019m not sure teaching our kids that there were some benefits for the enslaved from the practice is beneficial to anyone\u2026..
The fact is that slavery existed \u2014 and was not, in any way, a good thing. We may choose to look the other way, but we shouldn\u2019t say we didn\u2019t know.
