I had intended to write this blog on National Grandparents Day – September 8th. Since I had just become a new grandparent, I figured it would be appropriate. I realize that Locke probably won\u2019t look to his grandparents as his first or best source for advice. I\u2019m guessing he\u2019ll turn to Google, or whatever has replaced Google by the time he\u2019s old enough to seek advice.<\/p>\n
Even though it\u2019s a little later than I intended, both you faith readers are welcome to continue reading, but this is for Locke.<\/p>\n
Dear Locke,
\nWelcome to this world \u2013 I\u2019m afraid we haven\u2019t gotten it in the best condition for you, but it\u2019s still a pretty good place. You\u2019ve already started to look around with fresh eyes and a sense of wonder. Hopefully, you\u2019ll never lose that sense of wonder and fascination.<\/p>\n
So what should you do? Whatever you want. Even though it\u2019s not a perfect world, the list of possible experiences open to you is virtually endless. Years from now, you\u2019ll probably hear from your parents and others that I was a great one to give advice \u2013 never took much of it myself, but boy could I dish it out. Just so you don\u2019t feel left out, here\u2019s some advice for my favorite grandson\u2026.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Always do the best you can.
\n\u2022 Don\u2019t be afraid to try new things.
\n\u2022 Be honest.
\n\u2022 Don\u2019t be judgmental.
\n\u2022 Don\u2019t try to be someone else or live up someone else\u2019s expectations.
\n\u2022 But, just always try your best\u2026<\/p>\n
Figure out what you are passionate about \u2014 throughout your life. Trust me, this will change over time. Recognize your passion, pursue it and see how far you can go in life with it. Never – never<\/em> – let other people tell you what is important to you. You\u2019ll get a lot of advice (some of it good, like this blog) but never answers.<\/p>\n You will make mistakes \u2014 some of these \u201cmistakes\u201d will be so deemed by society, family or even yourself. They are going to happen, but life is an adventure \u2014 try to learn from mistakes and not make them again.
