{"id":2409,"date":"2021-07-27T16:02:26","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T16:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=2409"},"modified":"2021-07-27T16:02:27","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T16:02:27","slug":"the-war-that-wasnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=2409","title":{"rendered":"The War That Wasn&#8217;t?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Even though it was never \u201cofficially\u201d a war, 68 years ago today (July 27, 1953) the Korean Was ended with the signing of an armistice by U.S. and North Korea delegates at Panmunjom, Korea. The war had lasted just over three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without getting into the history of the conflict, it should be noted that the United States never formally declared war on North Korea (or its allies China and the Soviet Union.) The U.S. military led the United Nations\u2019 expeditionary force, but it was only acting on a UN Security Council resolution, and the UN itself cannot declare war.<br>It\u2019s also interesting that no peace treaty was ever signed, so North and South Korea are technically still at war.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the \u201cwar,\u201d that is sometimes referred to as \u201cthe forgotten war\u201d because it drew much less media attention than other conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War.
