So I\u2019m good with a <em>dreary<\/em> day as long as we get some rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a\u00a0 word that I heard a lot when I was growing up \u2014 dreary \u2014 pretty much always used to describe the weather. I remember my parents and grandparents using it a lot \u2014 if it was a cloudy day, or especially if it was a cloudy and cold day, it was referred to as dreary.<br>I don\u2019t remember hearing it much in recent years, but Claire used the term the other day and the day was, in fact, overcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did a bit of checking, and I\u2019d say that if you describe something as dreary, you mean that it\u2019s dull and depressing \u2014 I suppose that could even be applied to people, although I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve ever heard it used that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re into word origins, I think the term comes from the Old English <em>dreorig<\/em>, meaning sad or sorrowful. It originally meant cruel, bloody, blood-stained \u2014 from <em>droer<\/em>, meaning gore or blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So generally speaking, dreary isn\u2019t a particularly happy word\u2026 maybe that\u2019s why it seems to crop up more often these days. But at least it has lost its original sense and the notion of \u201cdripping blood.\u201d So I guess maybe we\u2019re at least moving in the right direction\u2026.<br>\u2014 30 \u2014<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s raining here today \u2014 I\u2019m not complaining, it\u2019s rained all around us this year but we have hardly gotten any.
