Which is it \u2014 with an \u201co\u201d or an \u201ca?\u201d Actually, in this case, both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m certainly not a grammar expert, but I <em>think<\/em> I know when to use capital or capitol\u2026 these words are a set of homophones \u2014 words that sound the same when spoken but have different meanings and different spellings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capital (with an \u201ca\u201d) has many meanings. It is the seat of government for a state or country. Upper case letters are referred to as capitals. Capital means wealth or money, especially in the context of business. Capital can mean particular or significant, or it can mean \u201cfabulous.\u201d And then there are capital crimes and capital punishment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capitol (with an \u201co\u201d) refers to buildings \u2014 only buildings, like a state capitol building or the U.S. Capitol building. Only buildings \u2014 that\u2019s it\u2019s only use. I suppose that\u2019s why it\u2019s always been easy for me to remember.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seems pretty simple, but start taking notice of how the two words are used in the news and social media \u2014 sometimes it just seems like a random choice.
