{"id":1535,"date":"2019-07-31T19:36:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T19:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1535"},"modified":"2019-07-31T19:36:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T19:36:02","slug":"d-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1535","title":{"rendered":"D-Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This subject has come up before, but last week it surfaced again\u2026 everyone seems to have their own opinion as to what the \u201cD\u201d in \u201cD-Day\u201d stands for. During our after golf discussion that address \u201cimportant subjects,\u201d it was decided that the \u201cd\u201d in d-day stood for <em>departure<\/em> or <em>decision<\/em> or <em>doomsday<\/em> or <em>debarkation<\/em> or <em>day of decision<\/em> or just plain <em>day<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that the \u201cd\u201d doesn\u2019t actually stand for anything \u2014 it\u2019s just a placeholder used to designate a particular day on the calendar. <em>Time<\/em> Magazine reported on June 12, 1944 that \u201cas far as the U.S. Army can determine, the first use of D for Day, H for Hour was in Field order No. 8, of the First Army, A.E.F., issued on Sept. 20, 1918, which read, \u2018The First Army will attack at H-Hour on D-Day with the object of forcing the evacuation of the St. Mihiel salient.\u2019\u201d So the term stretches back to World War I. The term allowed units to effectively coordinate their operations ahead of time even when they didn\u2019t know the actual start date, and also provided flexibility in the event that the launch day shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cD-Day\u201d as we have come to know it refers to the morning of June 6, 1944 when Allied forces staged an enormous assault on German positions on the beaches of Normandy, France.<br \/>\nBut the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 wasn\u2019t the only D-Day of World War II. Every amphibious assault \u2014 including those in North Africa, the Pacific, Sicily, Italy, etc. \u2014 had its own D-Day.<\/p>\n<p>Just another point of interest\u2026. we usually see the \u201cD\u201d in D-Day capitalized. That\u2019s because it usually is referring to the Allied invasion of Normandy. It is properly written in lowercase when the term is being used generically, and capitalized when it refers to the 1944 Normandy invasion.<br \/>\n\u2014 30 \u2014<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This subject has come up before, but last week it surfaced again\u2026 everyone seems to have their own opinion as to what the \u201cD\u201d in \u201cD-Day\u201d stands for.
