Today is Abraham Lincoln\u2019s birthday \u2014 the sixteenth president of the United States and president during the Civil War, he will forever be remembered by his inspirational rise to fame, his efforts to rid the country of slavery, and his ability to hold together a divided nation. Lincoln\u2019s Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, and two outstanding inaugural addresses are widely regarded as some of the greatest speeches ever delivered by an American politician.<\/p>\n
A few nights ago, Donald Trump again proclaimed that he is such a great president that the only predecessor he can be fairly compared to is Abraham Lincoln. Actually, there are are some similarities\u2026.
\nBoth Lincoln and Trump were Republicans who defeated Democrats.
\nLincoln suffered from depression\u201a Trump finds many things \u201cSAD!\u201d
\nAnd of course they were\/are both great orators, with inspiring quotes like:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced\u2026. That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.\u201d \u2014 Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 19, 1863 in Gettysburg.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do we want all these people from [expletive] countries coming here?\u201d \u2014 Donald Trump, Jan. 18, 2018, at the White House.<\/p>\n
So, yea, there are some genuine parallels between Lincoln and Trump, but I think a number of years from now, historians will still be able to tell them apart\u2026..
