{"id":1233,"date":"2018-08-26T19:19:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-26T19:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2018-08-26T19:19:19","modified_gmt":"2018-08-26T19:19:19","slug":"back-to-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1233","title":{"rendered":"Back to School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Number One (first born) grandchild started school a few days ago \u2014 third grade already!<br \/>\nWe\u2019ve been fortunate to attend \u201cgrandparents day\u201d at her school the past couple of years and I was thinking the other day about sitting in her classroom and looking around \u2014 how classrooms have changed since I went to school.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we had wooden desks with inkwells arranged in rows with the teacher\u2019s desk up front, but lots of other physical changes (besides the seating) to her classroom environment struck me as well. There aren\u2019t any more chalkboards (we used to call them blackboards) \u2014 now some have \u201cwhiteboards,\u201d but a lot have \u201csmart boards\u201d where both humans and computers can write\/draw on them. We used to always have a world globe in our classroom\u2026 of course that was before Google Maps \u2014 and \u2014 countries used to keep the same name, sometimes for <em>years<\/em>. We also had pull down maps (like a window shade) usually mounted above the chalkboard. And to sharpen our pencils, every room had a pencil sharpener \u2014 mounted on the wall and you had to crank it by hand.<\/p>\n<p>Times have changed\u2026. Emily probably wouldn\u2019t recognize half the things in our classrooms \u2014 and \u2014 to be honest, I don\u2019t recognize a lot of things in her room.<br \/>\nGood Luck in third grade.
