{"id":1188,"date":"2018-06-17T15:41:13","date_gmt":"2018-06-17T15:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1188"},"modified":"2018-06-17T15:41:13","modified_gmt":"2018-06-17T15:41:13","slug":"someone-to-look-up-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jimmy.ekota.net\/?p=1188","title":{"rendered":"Someone to Look Up To"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, here it is Father\u2019s Day again&#8230; The first known Father\u2019s Day service occurred at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. (Another \u201cfirst\u201d for West Virginia.) Grace Golden Clayton had asked her pastor, Dr. R. Thomas Webb, if a Sunday service could be held to honor fathers.<br \/>\nThe Fairmont service was the first known to honor fathers, but it didn\u2019t turn into an annual event and the idea wasn\u2019t promoted with any enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>A number of other people across the nation had similar ideas throughout the years, but most didn\u2019t gain much momentum. Father\u2019s Day was celebrated mostly in local communities for many years \u2014 and didn\u2019t become a permanent national holiday until much later. The first \u201cFather\u2019s Day bill\u201dwas introduced in Congress in 1913, but in spite of encouragement by President Woodrow Wilson, it didn\u2019t pass. In 1966, Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as a day to honor fathers. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that Father\u2019s day be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June.<\/p>\n<p>A fellow Okie, Will Rogers, once said, \u201cHis heritage to his children wasn\u2019t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure \u2014 the treasure of his example as a man and a father.\u201d<br \/>\nI think these words almost perfectly describe the two best dads I know&#8230;Happy father\u2019s day, Dave and Chris!!<br \/>\n\u2014 30 \u2014<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, here it is Father\u2019s Day again&#8230; The first known Father\u2019s Day service occurred at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908.
